About the Matthew Hylton Memorial Award
Named after its first recipient, this award recognizes independent laundromat operators who make significant contributions across several key areas:
Recipients are nominated by their peers in the industry and selected by Dave and Carla Menz. Each recipient receives an award, gift basket and $1,000 donated to the charity of their choice.
Why Steve Andrews?
Steve Andrews is a first-generation laundromat operator and began his personal journey into the industry in approximately 2019. Steve has always had an entrepreneurial tendency, and his exit from corporate America and into small business ownership was a natural pathway for him. Steve was nominated for the Matt Hylton Memorial Award by his friend and equipment distributor JD Dixon of National Laundry Equipment in Nashville, TN.
Steve currently owns and operates The Wash House chain of laundromats in Nashville, TN., which currently has 2 locations with a 3rd in the works. Since entering the laundry industry in early 2019 Steve has built a phenomenal team that operates the day-to-day operations under his leadership. Aside from the businesses’ financial success, Steve and his team pride themselves on giving back to the community in many ways. Among these are numerous Free Laundry Days for the community, and their daily “servitude through business” attitude that permeates the entire team.
“Steve runs 2 of the finest laundromats I have ever seen, has a highly professional WDF business, and has developed a successful pickup & delivery business as well. Most importantly, he consistently and quietly looks for ways to better his community by helping those in need. In store innovations that Steve has adopted into his stores are numerous. Steve was instrumental in advancing the industry in Nashville with innovations like High Extract and Touch Screen equipment, Ozone Technology, and Reversing Dryers. “Steve’s stores are truly industry leading masterpieces, but if you hear the passion and vision behind how he’s built his team to serve others, it’s truly inspiring.” says Dave Menz, Founder of Laundromat Millionaire Co.
Personally, Steve has been intentional about giving back to the industry since the day he opened his first store. So appreciative of every person that has given him a few minutes of their team, he’s chosen to immerse himself in all aspects of networking and community to innovate, learn and share his knowledge with fellow owners. Over the last few years, Steve has been a fixture at industry conferences, trade shows, workshops and numerous social media groups that allow owners to collaborate and share best practices. Steve has been featured on numerous industry podcasts and been chosen as a speaker and expert panelist at several industry conferences including the Laundromat Millionaire Conference, and CLEAN Show 2025.

His Impact on the Laundry Industry
Matthew Hylton was a second-generation laundromat operator who transformed the Kansas City laundry industry through innovation, mentorship, and community spirit. Beginning his journey in 2016, he built the successful Mega Wash chain while also serving as a sales engineer for Loomis Brothers Equipment Co., where he guided owners through modernizing their stores.
Known for adopting cutting-edge technologies like high-extract washers, ozone systems, and touchscreen equipment, Matt continually pushed the boundaries of what a laundromat could be. His forward-thinking approach also brought Kansas City its largest vended washer, advanced pickup and delivery services, and the Presso on-demand garment care kiosk.
Beyond technology, Matt was a generous mentor, helping countless newcomers succeed in the business. His colleagues describe him as humble, innovative, and deeply committed to elevating others. Industry leaders, including Dave Menz and Matt Lamons, recognized his exceptional impact and leadership. Matt was a regular presence at industry events, always eager to share insights and learn from peers. His contributions continue to inspire laundromat owners nationwide. As the inaugural recipient of this award, Matthew Hylton’s legacy represents innovation, service, and heart.
A Lasting Legacy
After fighting a brave battle with cancer, Matthew Hylton passed away at his home on October 22, 2024 surrounded by the love of his family. Though his life was cut unexpectedly short, his impact lives on. His strength of character and determination to serve his community have inspired many others to follow in his footsteps. We consider ourselves so blessed to have known him.
